Dear Ben,

I know how you stress over what to give me every year for my birthday. It's so sweet, 'cause being married to you is gift enough. Plus you always throw me such elaborate birthday parties, which are amazing and between the incredible decorations and the food you make yourself, I don't know how you always manage to keep it a surprise! Anyway, to help you out this year (although I'm probably too late- my gift is probably already wrapped and hidden away in some large closet...) I thought I'd make a list of some little things I wouldn't mind receiving:

red italian leather driving gloves

{don't forget the car to go with them...}

some new enamel cookware

this sweater

or this cutie cookie jar

i love these sandals {but oh yeah, you don't}

i also still really want these boots (burnt red, natural or buttermilk, please...)

Or, if you don't want to go to the trouble of shopping, feel free to just give me a couple thou and I'll take care of myself!

Thanks honey-buns...

love, me

Alice in Wonderland

So, for Maggie's birthday this year I decided to bite the bullet and actually do a friend party...the theme was "The Mad Hatter's Tea Party". We ate fresh fruit, mini muffins and cupcakes (which my kids call "muffins with frosting") and drank lemonade from cute glass teacups. Here are some pictures from the party (thank you friends who had cameras & took pictures, because I couldn't find mine!):

{we played "Pin the Grin on the Cheshire Cat"}

{I made everyone in the family dress up: Maggie was Alice, Ben was the Mad Hatter, I was the Queen of Hearts, and the boys were Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Cash specifically asked to be Tweedledee because he was not about to be TweedleDUM...) }

And many more...

Three years ago I gave birth to my little froggie baby. My, what large eyes he had...

And now, well, he's a little boy (unless you ask him and then he'll try and convince you that he's a grown-up). I teased him yesterday about getting a barbie for his birthday. Apparently those are for girls, he wants a hero. And a gun shaped like a swirly... {don't know what that means}.

Happy Birthday, lovie boy.
Kisses.

Little Oscar M.

How did Oscar go from this sweet, little, sleepy-eyed, lovie BABY:

to this walking, babbling, blue-eyed little BOY:

in just one year?!

{Just looking at that first picture kinda makes me baby hungry... oh no.}

A Whole Lot of Poppycock...

Well, I mean, it's my life, so perhaps it's not complete poppycock. Saturday was Ben's 32nd birthday. We wanted to give him a super duper special day, so we left him alone for the most part. After a breakfast of donuts (topped with a candle and sparkler) and a hearty round of Happy Birthday to You, he went off for a day of golf and I took the kids to the:

This is part of the Freedom Festival and one week before the 4th of July the kids in the area get to do a fun little parade down Center Street in Provo. We started out at the beginning of the parade right behind the leading band. By the time we got to the last block, the finale band was literally running us over (and I mean literally. If I were any less of a mom I'd have a picture to post of Cash on the ground- having fallen off his scooter- and band members tripping over him while playing "America the Beautiful". Instead I ran back and snagged him out of the way right as the tuba player was about to tread on my boy's noggin.) Afterwards we were exhausted (and some of us were a little miffed that the popsicles they hand out at the end were all gone.)

So we retraced our steps back to the car and headed to the: Farmers Market!

We hung out there, ate lunch, relaxed in the shade and were refreshed. Ben in the meantime was having lunch with his brothers, eating (so I'm told) a slice of both the Concrete Pie and Asphalt Pie at Winger's. But it was his birthday, remember, so that's totally allowed.

Sunday was another beautiful day. Beautiful. And so we decided to get out of doors and enjoy this earth the Lord has given us. We went hiking up to Bridal Veil Falls and let the kids play in the water.

We missed the Bear that was giving folks a scare, but Ben really did save a woman's life. She almost fell into Provo River off a 10 foot cliff. Backwards. Head first.

Then we packed up and took our hero home where later on we hosted a BBQ for Ben's family. Can I just say that I don't think it gets much better than home made grilled hamburgers. That is unless those hamburgers are followed by home made Yogurt Cake with Strawberries and home made Ice Cream. Yum. {Can you tell that someone forgot the camera for this part of the festivities? Oops.}

Anyways, to recap: Ben had a great birthday, the kids and I had a fun weekend, and oh yeah:

p-a-r-t-y

So, Cash had a milestone a few days back (9 days ago, to be precise). He celebrated his first birthday! We had family over to celebrate and it was pretty much a ploy to get all Ben's family squished into one room where they were forced to watch my boy toddle around on the rug and say nice things about him. Of course, to return the favor I made taco soup. And if that wasn't enough, we served birthday cake and ice cream. Since my family couldn't take time out of their "busy" schedules to come up and see their adorable little grandson on this momentous occasion, they have asked me to post some pictures of the evening's frivolities. Of course, these pictures don't come close to showing the true liveliness of the party. In fact, Uncle Jason even shed a single tear as he exclaimed,"I can only dream of hosting a party as full of love and laughter and merrymaking as this birthday celebration has been!" What can I say? I throw a darn good party.

i haven't been blogging very regularly lately, which probably has something to do with the fact that, i don't know, i'm moving in 3 weeks and trying to pack up my house while my husband is gone most of the time on business trips and i'm also trying to get ready for my sister and her family who are coming for a week long visit TONIGHT. whew! all that aside, i do feel a bit like a blog slacker. so i thought i'd sit down for a few minutes today while one of my kids is napping and the other is watching shrek and ponder on the fact that today i turn 28 years old. t minus 2 years to the big 3-0. here are some "interesting" facts about me that some of you may not know:

3. one of my favorite dinners is tator tot caserole
4. i've never seen any of the Rocky movies

Dear Maggie,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LOVE! We had your birthday party last night with Grandma and Papa Quinn, and the rest of the Quinn aunts, uncles, and cousins- minus Jason’s family. Your favorite part was singing “Happy Birthday” and blowing out the candles on your "pancake", so we did it two times just for you. We could have stopped right there and you would have been fine- who needs presents when you can blow out birthday candles? But we went ahead and helped you open gifts. You did this with an air of disdain, as if to say, "I'm doing this for your benefit, not mine..." I can hardly believe that you are turning two today. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I held you in my arms for the first time, and now you’re a walking, talking, and very opinionated little person.

I remember those first few luxurious months when you would accommodate my need to just sit and hold you in my arms- probably because you were still immobile at the time. As soon as you mastered the art of crawling, it was all I could do to keep you on my lap more than 5 minutes. With each level of mobility learned, you have found a new sense of independence and freedom. From the time you wake up to the time your little head hits the pillow, you are constantly on the go. Nap times are a battle of the wits and I have to coax you to sit on my lap by reading you books in the rocking chair. After a few books, I ask if you would like me to sing you a song. And after a few songs, you finally fall asleep, your head heavy on my shoulder, your breathing slow and even. Bedtime is different, I think because by that time you have completely tapped your energy reserves. When it’s suggested that you put on your pajamas, you do so willingly, even enthusiastically, and then it’s you who suggests some “nuggle” time, either with daddy or me. I love this time where you will lay back in my arms and just look at me with your blue eyes until you calmly drift off to sleep. Sometimes I will just sit there in the rocking chair, long after you’re asleep, cradling you, and trying to fully take advantage of these rare moments when I can hold you close, kiss your pink, pink cheeks, and study your sweet little face.

Sweet as your little face may be, it is also an outer reflection of your current inner emotion. You, my dear, have mastered the art of facial expression. A wrinkled nose and gritted teeth let daddy and I know you’re angry. Raised eyebrows and a tilted back head and we know a “Who’s Really In Charge” battle is about to begin. Big grins and squinted eyes are a sign that you’re having a good time. And, my favorite, a closed mouth smile and a calm, relaxed face and I know you’re about to say my favorite phrase of all, “I lub you”.

Your facial expressions may be easy to read, but sometimes it still takes a little bit of detective work to figure out what you are actually trying to say with words. The other day we were all in the car and you started crying and saying, “Crazies, crazies!” At first your father and I were wondering if you were lamenting the family you had been born into, but I finally figured out that you were asking for raisins. “Lippers” are slippers, “neenky” is stinky, “gramma eggs” are scrambled eggs and “dee-u-sis-lis-us” is delicious. Then there are words that need no translation at all, like “Mine!” “No!” and “Stop it!”. Sometimes there are days when these words seem to be the only ones exiting your mouth, and on those days you usually end up in a time out. Fifteen seconds after I close the door to your room, it opens, your head pops out and you make it known that you have had a complete attitude change and are now going to be a “good goi”.

You continue to be our little Xerox™ machine, repeating back the last few words of every sentence we say to you. And then you’ll add overheard phrases to your own sentences, like when you firmly tell me in the mornings that you want “pant-cakes for breakfast, okay honey?” The copying doesn’t stop with words anymore, it has now spilled over into actions, and while I go about taking care of my daily tasks, you are always right there behind me- my little mini shadow. You watch as I bounce Cash on my hip and do the same to your baby doll. When I’m cleaning the dishes, you’ll pull a chair over to the counter so you can stand by my side and do the same. When I’m scolding, you’ll put your hand on your hip, tilt your head to the side and shake your little finger at me and it’s as though I’m looking in a mirror. At this point daddy shakes his head, probably wondering how he’s going to cope when you’re older and a full-functioning version of me.

I have to say Maggie, that being your mommy is sometimes one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It is physically, mentally, and sometimes even emotionally challenging and draining. But it’s also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I love you so much that sometimes I really feel like I could burst. But something inside me must be growing to hold all that love, because each day I know you, I love you a little bit more. I’m so glad you’re mine, Maggie. These last two years have been some of the happiest of my life, and I’m looking forward to the years ahead- neenky days and all!

Love, Mommy

happy day to me

Well, this memorial weekend was definately memorable. I turned 27... Ben was disgusted to be married to someone so old. Also our comedy club had it's Grand Opening, doesn't it look hilarious? And Maggie chased some geese. Don't you all wish you were here?
